Leonie Maier Becomes the First German Youth Ambassador for Neglected Tropical Diseases

The German Network against Neglected Tropical Diseases (DNTDs) and the German Society for Tropical Medicine, Travel Medicine and Global Health (DTG) have launched a new Youth Ambassador Program to give young voices in global health greater visibility and impact. Since October 2024, Leonie Maier has been the first German Youth Ambassador for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

The 28-year-old medical student from Leipzig has been committed to global health for many years and brings extensive experience and motivation to the newly established program. In her introduction video, she highlights why this topic is so important to her: NTDs are not only medical challenges but also expressions of deep global inequalities. This is precisely why young perspectives are needed to raise awareness and drive change.

As Youth Ambassador, Leonie Maier aims to increase the visibility of NTDs in Germany, engage young people in global health issues, and build bridges between medicine, politics, and society. The goal of the program is to empower the next generation of experts and advocates in global health and to provide new impetus for combating neglected tropical diseases.

We look forward to working together and to the many new impulses that the first German Youth Ambassador for NTDs will bring.
